Basic Phrases

  1. Prosím (pro-seem) = Possibly the most useful word in Czech. It means: 1) Please, 2) Here you are, 3) You’re welcome, 4) What did you say?, 5) I’ll have … and can generally be used in times of doubt.
  2. Děkuju (dyeh-kooyoo) = Thank you
  3. Ano (ah-noh) = Yes. Ano is often shortened to no, sometimes resulting in cross-language confusion.
  4. Ne (neh) = No. Fairly straightforward and direct.
  5. Dobrý den (dob-ree den) = Hello, Good afternoon.
  6. Ahoj (ah-hoy) = Hi. or Bye. Much like Aloha this word can be used both when meeting and leaving. You will often hear Czechs saying Ahoj while waving you goodbye. Čau is another informal equivalent.
  7. Kde je toaleta? (kdeh yeh toh-ah-le-ta) = Where is the bathroom? Obviously useful, but getting you into the realm of phrases where you need to understand the answer.
  8. Kolik to stojí? (koh-leek toh stoh-yee) = How much is it? Ditto.
  9. Co je to? (tso yeh toh) = What is it? This phrase is especially useful to expand your vocabulary.
  10. Dobré ráno (dobrye rano) = Good morning
  11. Dobré odpoledne (dobrye odpoledne) = Good afternoon
  12. Dobrou noc (dobroh nots) = Good night
  13. Na shledanou (nas-khledanow) = Goodbye
  14. Jak se jmenujete? (Yak se menooyete) = What is your name?
  15. Jmenuji se... (Menooyi se) = My name is... 
  16. Jak se máte? (Jak se mahte) = How are you?
  17. Děkuji dobře, a vy? (Dyekooyi dobrzhe, a vi) = Fine thanks, and you? 
  18. Rozumím (rozoomeem) = I understand.
  19. Nerozumím. (Nerozoomeem) = I don't understand.
  20. Mluvíte anglicky? (Mlooveete anglitskee) = Do you speak English? 
  21. Nemluvím česky. (Nemlooveem chehskee) = I don't speak Czech.
  22. Těší mě. (Tyeh-sheee mnyeh) = Nice to meet you 
  23. Na zdraví = Cheers!

Other czech phrases

  1. Z technických důvodů zavřeno. = Closed due to technical reasons.
  2. Volané číslo neexistuje = The number you are calling does not exist.
  3. Ukončete výstup a nástup, dveře se zavírají! = Stop getting off or getting on, the doors are closing! (Prague subway announcement)
  4. Příští zastávka: Náměstí Republiky = Next stop: Náměstí Republiky
  5. Máte přání? = May I help you?
  6. Moje vznášedlo je plné úhořů. = My hovercraft is full of eels.
  7. Dám si jedno pivo prosím. = I'll have a beer please.
  8. Platím za všechny! = I pay for everyone!
  9. Kolik to stojí? = How much does it cost?
  10. Zaplatíme. = We're ready to pay. (asking for the bill at a restaurant)
  11. Je tu obsazeno? = Is this seat taken?
  12. Smím prosit? = Would you like to dance?
  13. Jak se česky řekne... = How do you say... in Czech?
  14. Je to pro mne španĕlská vesnice = It’s all Greek to me.
  15. Miluji tě = I love you
  16. Padají trakaře = It's raining cats and dogs.
  17. Prosím mluvte pomaleji = Please speak more slowly
  18. Veselé vánoce a šťastný nový rok = Merry Christmas and happy New Year
  19. Všechno nejlepší k narozeninám! = Happy Birthday
  20. Všechno zaplatí tento pán = This gentleman will pay for everything
  21. Šplouchá mu na maják = It's splashing on his lighthouse
  22. Kdy zase budeš skákat po státech, Prevíte. = To hop over the state.
